Motif Twenty

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

....that's the sigh of relief that comes when you've made it through another tax season. Obviously the deadline is not until Tuesday, but it always seems to slow down right at the end.

This is why I haven't posted in nearly a month! Just too busy to do any scanning or posting. I do quite a bit of tatting in the evenings when I get home from work in preparation for the busy show season, but never manage to get any of it onto my computer.

Here is motif number 20 - not my original design - but very different and unusual, I think. It was time consuming and tedious, because of there being so many chains, but I am very pleased with the results. I will probably turn this into one of my pin/pendant combinations - so it can be worn as either thing.

Thank you to Shay for posting the pattern, which can be found here. As soon as I saw this I just had to try it - I've got a lot of books, and I've seen a lot of different tatting patterns, but never anything like this.

Right now I am working on a butterfly from Rozella Linden's book "Tatted Butterfly Garden." The wings are made with Marilee's Watermelon Tourmaline thread - my FAVORITE color of all time! I am having difficulty with the magic butterfly body, though, and I am about ready to e-mail Ruth and get some help! It frustrates me to no end when I can't figure out something on my own, so I'll probably fiddle with it a little more. When I am finished with it, it will be motif number 21, so look for it in the next week or so.

You tatting of that pattern is absolutely perfect. Did you make it from the vintage pattern without any other help?

That is absolutely beautiful! I've seen this pattern a lot on eTatters lately, I may just have to tat it now. That is a gorgeous color of thread. You have such nice even stitches.
Speaking of tax season if you have a Baskin Robbins ice cream shop around you they have a new flavor of ice cream out called "Tax Crunch" for anyone that needs a break from doing their taxes...LOL

And all I can say is WOW! What an absolutely gorgeous job you did.

The beads and the color just FIT somehow...I'm in awe.

Thanks everybody! I did make it from the vintage pattern, without any other help - although I admit I had to untie a few knots when I realized what I had just done wasn't going to work out the way I thought - especially with those chains going down to the center and back up again.

I may have to take a trip to Baskin Robbins...

Thanks again, Shay, for posting that pattern - it is so unusual.

Well done, Elizabeth, for succeeding with an antique pattern! It certainly has the WOW factor!

Elizabeth may I ask how you did the chains going down to the centre and back.

I have made the pattern and tried every way that I can think of but so far cannot avoid one chain overlapping the other as it gets back to the top and on to the next chain.

I have studied your picture but cannot see how you did it.
Could you email me at tatskool at eircom dot net and help...please!

Ummm...I wouldn't mind if Elizabeth put in the comment section or even another blog post how she did that with the chains. I would like very much to tat this and any help available (if I need it) would be welcome.

Hmmm - let me see if I can explain this. As I was doing the piece, I was going around the motif clockwise as I tatted the chains. When I got to the last row, I RW (reversed work) and did the first chain on the outer row counter-clockwise. Join to the outer ring of the flower. To do the chain going toward the center, switch shuttles (I almost always use 2 shuttles rather than a shuttle and ball) and do the first half of the chain going toward the center, join it to the center with a normal join, and complete the second half of the chain going back out away from the center. Join back at the top where you started, switch shuttles again, and continue around the outside of the motif counter-clockwise.

I hope this is clear and helps!

That sounds very fiendishly clever!

I started another one last night so hope to try that out tonight and report back. I had tried first part of the chain flipped last part unflipped, etc. couldn't figure out how to do it as a ring like Wally did.

Thanks a million

Thanks Elizabeth, That was very clear and sound very do-able.

I never thought about trying to do it as a ring, but I guess you could as long as you still switch shuttles. The join to the center is just a normal join, so a ring would work. I think mine look a lot like rings because of using that type of join in the center.

Wally's looks really good with the rings - I'll have to try it that way the next time.

This is a really, really cool pattern!! As usual, your tatting is flawless! Love how you added the beads.

Your method works a treat...at least it will when I have enough thread left to switch shuttles, as it was I had to SLT and it's not perfect...yet....another try tonight!
