A Book Review and Something New!

I've been wanting to try tatting with cabone rings for a while now. So when Jon Yusoff's book, "Tatting With Rings" came out last month, well, I just had to have it (click here to get yourself a copy!)! Fortunately it came just as I was leaving for a show, so I packed it up, hoping to have some time to play in the hotel room at night.

At the show it rained all day Saturday, so I had a lot more time that I thought I would (customers were scarce, as only ducks belong out in that kind of weather). I was SO glad I had Jon's book with me, I'll tell you. Here's what I did:

Jon explains everything very well and has wonderful diagrams so I caught on to the technique pretty quickly, and found it to be quite enjoyable. I love the little flower in the center of the ring, and the instructions were very clear and easy to follow for this technique as well.

For my second piece I did not add beads, but I did also tat a chain for a complete necklace:

I plan on doing some earrings next and maybe doing a little designing myself. I need to find a supplier for the rings (Jon did include some with the book, but not nearly enough for all the fun I plan on having with them), and I'd like to see if I can find some smaller ones too.

A hearty "thank you" to Jon for this lovely book!

I get smaller rings for all my pieces from Joann. I can't find larger rings that I like though. Joann's are too thick.

Beautiful! I haven't had time to try her book yet but I've tatted Sadie's patterns and they get addictive.

Jon's rings are quite thin. I've never seen any like that. You can get different sized cabone (or curtain rings as we call them here) in most sewing and craft stores in assorted sizes. They are thicker so I'm not sure how the center will work out with them.

Thank you so much for the book review. I have always found your tatting very pleasing to look at. Your stitches are so uniform. Thank you for the lovely rendition of my designs. I could not have done better myself.

As Gina wrote, the rings are like the ones used for curtains and blinds and they do have different sizes. In fact the new ones that I got from my local needlecraft shops are slight bigger and thicker than the ones I used for the models in the book. I suppose you may have to make a few tries with each new ring to get the right stitch counts for the centres and around it.

I love your pieces Elizabeth. And also love the image you share, so sharp and detail. Your picture of Jon's design "PERMATA" helped me spot my DS counting error. I want to share that story in my blog, with some pictures (including Jon's original picture) and if you don't mind, can I use your picture as a comparison to mine?

Many thanks in advance, hope you do not feel offended by my foul request.

Regard

Thank You ^_^
However, I'm still waiting response from Jon's, so I can't publish the story yet.

Once again...Thank you.
